This conference is a New Zealand first. It gives New Zealanders a unique opportuniy to participate in an international forum of professionals, families and people with Down syndrome. It will provide the opportunity to access current knowledge from the professionals and exchange information between all participants. It is knowledge which will ensure a promising future for people with Down Syndrome.

Who Should Attend

Conference Main Objective
The key objective of the conference is the exchange of information and discussion of current research and trends.

Families and people with Down syndrome will be better informed and feel more empowered as they pursue their dreams and aspirations. professionals will gain valuable knowledge and enlarged networks everyone will share exciting, memorable and thought provoking events.

Focus on participation of people with Down syndrome
The conference will have a number of speakers, workshops and functions planned to meet the particular interests of people with Down syndrome, who are of course welcome to attend any of the conference sessions. A limited number of free places (registration only) are available for people with Down syndrome. Be in quickly! We will be looking for input to plan workshops and events with an emphasis towards the interest of young adults.


An outstanding lineup of International Speakers including:

Prof. Sue Buckley
Professor of Developmental Disability and Director, Centre of Disability Studies, Dept. of Psychology, University of Portsmouth, U.K. Prof. Buckley has more than 30 years experience in the field of learning disability, in health and educational ISSues. She is in considerable demand as a public speaker and has addressed most international conferences on Down syndrome in recent years. Her work and that of her colleagues is quoted in aIl recent texts on Down syndrome.

Dr Steven Trumble
Director of DevelopmentaI Disabilities (Monash University Melbourne). Dr Trumble is highly respected for his work in the field of intellectual disability and in particular Down syndrome.

Chris Burke
Chris is internationally recognised for his starring rote in the television series "Life Goes On". He is much sought after on the American and international public speaking arena, and has worked as an advocate for the National Down Syndrome Society in NewYork. Chris is an inspiring and talented young man.

Ruth Croomer
Ruth is 25yrs old and an accomplished actor. She is well known to Australian TV audiences for her role in "House Gang" and "Country Practice". Ruth has been President of FAA "The Up Club" for the past 3 years - she is also a member of the Down Syndrome Assoc. of NSW management committee, the Council for lntellectuaI Disability Services and Vice-President of Citizen Advocacy Astride.

Gabrielle Clark
Gabrielle is 22yrs old - she is a founding member of the Future Adult Advisors (FAA) and editor of the Newsletter. She has served on the board of Northside Enterprises (Post School Options) Disability Rights Centre in NSW. Gabrielle is currently a member of the Down Syndrome Assoc. of New South Wales management committee and the assistant secretary for Special Olympics Sydney Northern Region. She is employed as a clerical Assistant for Micro-Pay. Gabrielle wants the world to know that people with Down syndrome can achieve.

Conference program
The programme will include Keynote Addresses and Workshops covering a wide range of topics with three main threads of interest, Education, Health and Inclusion.

Accommodation
Is available at the conference venue the Waipuna Hotel and Conference Centre where a special rate has been negotiated.

There are a number of Motels and Motor Inns within IOkms from the conference venue. (wiII advise on conference Registration MateriaI)

Registration
We are endeavouring to obtain sponsorship in order to keep the registration fee at $150.00 Fees will include: Cocktail Function and Official Opening Friday evening Lunch, Morning and Afternoon teas Saturday Night Official Conference Dinner and Entertainment

Child care
Limited spaces for babies up to the age of 18mths wilt be available at the conference venue.They will be cared for by qualified personnel. There may be a minimal charge involved.
